"Recent estimates have put the level of anxiety disorders at over 50 million American adults.  These estimates do not include children.  The medical response has been medication.  The nonmedical response has been drugs and alcohol.  These approaches while rapid in immediate relief have not solved the problem and frequently lead to additional negative consequences, such as addiction.  The anxiety is treated as the disease."  Robert Cancro, MD

EDUCATION AND PREVENTION

According to the World Health Organization, four out of the five leading causes of disability days in the world are psychiatric in nature, including alcoholism, substance abuse, schizophrenia, and depression, and the fifth cause is AIDS. AIDS receives more financial support than all the other four causes combined! Clearly, the public has to be educated as to the epidemic level mental illness has reached. Mental illness must be given the attention it deserves since the numbers who suffer from mental illnesses has increased exponentially. GSI will advocate for mental health disorders using research, advocacy and educational outreach through press, special events and film documentaries.

RESEARCH

Research was implemented on the efficacy of individualized transcranial magnetic stimulation (iTMS). The results have been nothing short of astounding at 99% efficacy.

INTERVENTION AND RECOVERY

The pharmaceutical industry has focused exclusively on the development of medications for the short term relief of anxiety while not dealing with the underlying imbalance. We wish to help develop and test life style changes which can bring the person back to a better balance, utilizing a variety of techniques, breathing, meditation, self-hypnosis, biofeedback, and other holistic medical methods for relaxation. Studies have been implemented showing the profoundly positive effect meditation has on the brain. GSI will not only participate in further research related to the effectiveness of meditation but inform the public of  its results.

ADVOCACY

3 time Emmy Award winning anchor, Rita Cosby, is the spokesperson for the GSI. Rita Cosby wrote  “Quiet Hero: Secrets from my Father’s Past” which  is the product of her heroic effort to unearth her father’s traumatic experiences as a resistance fighter in his home country of Poland during World War II. Rita “gets” the most important interview of her career when her father reveals his acts of heroism and experiences of great trauma. Ryszard Kossobudski, aka Richard Cosby, was only 18 during the Warsaw uprising and endured unimaginable horrors. After being a prisoner of war, he was finally rescued by Allied forces weighing only 90 lbs at 6 feet tall! He feels that the world owes America a debt of gratitude. The world would simply be a completely different place if it hadn’t been for America’s efforts to fight the forces of evil during World War II. This book instills a sense of pride for all warriors as well as the American credo of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A short documentary not only about “Quiet Hero” but stress disorders, including PTSD, and the signs for those who are at risk, for example, returning veterans, children and spouses from families of abuse, the elderly, those who experienced traumatic events out of their control, e.g. 9/11 and other terrorist acts around the world, natural disasters, war, etc. The number of people who have been impacted in recent years, is dramatic. Robert Cancro, MD, Chairman Emeritus of NYU Langone’s Department of Psychiatry, will be at the helm of writing and narrating this documentary.
